UX/UI Designer

AV&C is a globally recognized experience design studio, creating digital landmarks in the built environment.  Our interdisciplinary team of artists, designers, technologists, engineers, developers, and producers delivers responsive and expressive media installations that build meaningful relationships between our clients and their key audiences.

We are seeking an early-career UX/UI Designer to join our Experience Design team. This is a design role focused on UX, interaction, and interface design—not software engineering or development.

The position is part-time and hybrid, based in our NYC studio, with potential to grow into a full-time role.

Role & Responsibilities

During project design phases, you would:

  • Collaborate with the Senior UX, UI, and Experience Designers on screen displays, touch table displays, tablet-based controllers, microsites, and physical spaces

  • Assist with defining user types and use case scenarios against the received experience strategy

  • Assist with user flows, wireframing, template designs, and component designs

  • Extrapolate existing UX and UI design systems, defining template variations, responsive configurations, edge cases, and exception variations across the entire design system

  • Develop additional branded graphic elements and icons, UI controls and interface elements, dynamic and static information design elements, microcopy, and user messages

  • Develop and demonstrate variations against different user types and use cases

  • Develop Figma-based interactive prototypes

  • Create complete design examples and “worst-case scenario” variations for client presentations and design approvals, and to help guide software development and testing

  • Help produce detailed and annotated project handoff documentation with necessary variations and examples to support software implementation.

  • Contribute to design critiques, internal team workshops, collaboration sessions, and regular internal project syncs

During project implementation phases you would:

  • Create production-ready vector and raster assets, components, templates, and pages

  • Revise and modify designs in response to ongoing client feedback, UX/UI gaps and efficiencies identified concurrent with software build, and internal/external QA

  • Maintain involvement throughout the implementation process, adjust designs to meet changing requirements and feature updates surfaced during QA while maintaining approved design integrity

  • Help to maintain and advocate for best practices, applied consistently across all projects

  • Document ongoing design edits and revisions, retroactively updating final design system files to reflect the actual build

What you bring to the table:

  • 2-4 years of UX and UI design experience for digital media experiences including user interfaces for tablets, touch tables, and wall displays; translating existing brand expressions into digital, passive and interactive media; static and linear content; modular template-driven design systems; information design; data visualization

  • A design-system thinker who embraces complexity while providing clarity

  • Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end project development from discovery, strategic UX thinking and design, and immaculately crafted UI design

  • Proven understanding of complex workflows, scalable systems, and modular rules-based platforms

  • Experience developing work for physical, in-person environments

  • Mastery of Figma and other prototyping tools, with well-established practices for design iteration and final handoff to software teams

  • An advocate for intuitive UX and interaction patterns, user-centered design, and Universal Design practices

  • Interest in responsive design in the built environment, multi-sensory haptics, spatial audio, and performative lighting

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Obsessively organized, collaborative, curious, and empathetic

The salary range for this part-time position is $38 - $55 per hour.  Salary is competitive and based on experience.
